South of the Yangtze, Thinking of Spring

青春幾何時

How many times will I see spring green

黃鳥鳴不歇

again, or yellow birds tireless in song?

天涯失鄉路

The road home ends at the edge of heaven.

江外老華發

Here beyond the river, my old hair white,

心飛秦塞雲

my heart flows north to cloudy passes,

影滯楚關月

I’m shadow in moolit southern mountains.

身世殊爛漫

My life a blaze of spent abundance, my old

田園久蕪沒

fields and gardens buried in weeds, where

歲晏何所從

am I going? It’s year’s-end, and I’m here

長歌謝金闕

chanting long farewells at heaven’s gate.
