相送臨高臺 |
I say goodbye, looking down from
this high terrace
|
川原杳何極 |
Where stream and plain stretch in
endless distances.
|
日暮飛鳥還 |
At sunset the birds return in
flight
|
行人去不息 |
And travelers go on and away,
never ceasing.

* A Reminder was an official court advisory
position whose job was to counsel the Emperor.
(Du Fu held this job briefly; characteristically, Du Fu’s
conscientiousness compelled him to try to make use of this largely ceremonial
post: he soon caused trouble for himself by offending the Emperor with his
candid advice and was banished to a provincial post.)
